About CDX - Usage

The ultimate purpose of the Climate Data Exchange is to support the efforts of climate scientists and researchers as the seek to understand Earth's environment.  The Climate Data Exchange seeks to provide that support by improving the quality of and the access to observable data from a variety of Earth orbiter missions.  The following list represents the types of science scenarios or science usage categories that the Climate Data Exchange seeks to enable:

  1. Bonygram Analysis – a plot of three variables, with one typically indicated by color variations, that describes some aspect of the climate (such as altitude, pressure and temperature for a given location) to be performed across multiple data sources
  2. Climate Model Scoring – Providing software to enable a statistically rigorous evaluation of climate models with respect to observable data across multiple data sources.
  3. Level 3 data – Providing a framework to enable a community of scientists to define and share their definitions and implementations of level three data representation and visualization.
  4. Model Parameterization – Providing an ability to refine models by providing support to help improve the determination of parameters used in model definitions.
  5. Model Initialization – Providing support for the initialization of models by easing access to climate data needed (from multiple data sources) used to seed or initialize the propagation of models from some initial state.
  6. Data Assimilation – Providing access to climate data across multiple data sources to enable predictive modeling using observations in order to refine and improve predictions of future events.
